# How do I determine the value of my shares?
## Shares of private companies do not trade in the public markets, therefore it can be difficult to assign value to shares.
A company's financials, stage of development, market potential, and progress compared to similar companies in its space all play a role in determining a valuation. Remember that valuations for private companies can be subjective and may evolve over time as the company progresses and market conditions change.
Ultimately, your share's value may remain undetermined until an event, such as an acquisition or IPO, occurs to set the price. You may be able to find information on the most recent share price in your Netcapital Dashboard. If there is no information available, please keep an eye out for company updates. While we encourage every company to keep investors updated, please be aware that it may be a significant amount of time between updates.
